Tips for Visiting the Reading Room:

When you arrive at CJH:

  • You will be required to pass through a security scan and put bags through an x-ray machine
  • After passing through security, please head to the Front Desk and let them know you will be researching in the Reading Room. They will provide a visitor badge
  • Visitor Services staff will assist with checking any items not allowed in the Reading Room. You will receive a clear plastic bag to tote only your essential personal items and research tools
    • Items that should be either left at home or at our 1st floor coat check: food, beverages, coats, bags (including purses), folders, laptop cases, strollers

Once you are in the Reading Room:

  • Stop by the reference desk to check-in with our librarians
  • Please be courteous to your fellow researchers and the Reading Room staff
  • Materials need to be handled with care. If you're unsure of how to handle an item, please ask! We will be happy to show you how best to hold and read your materials
  • The Reading Room is a place of research, learning, and discovery. Please respect each other's concentration and focus:
    • Talking is allowed, but please keep conversation brief and volume low
    • Longer, louder conversations can be conducted in our adjoining Genealogy Institute or in the gallery area near the elevator
    • Keep phones on silent
  • Feel free to step away from your table to use the restroom, get a drink of water, answer your phone, or stretch for a few minutes. Many researchers leave belongings if they go out for a short lunch. If you are leaving for an hour or more and still have materials on your table, please return them to the front desk and let staff know that you will be returning and that you'd like to put your items on hold. Please be aware that we are not responsible for your personal belongings

PLEASE NOTE:
Young children must be supervised at all times by a parent/adult and must be able to understand and obey all rules of the Reading Room.

Middle and High School students are encouraged to use the materials found at the Center for their research needs. We request that they bring a school picture ID on the day of their visit to comply with the rules for issuance of a Reading Room pass. Any students who cannot produce a photo ID for admittance must be accompanied by a parent/adult with appropriate identification.
