BIRTH AND MARRIAGE RECORDS

Many people ask about marriages and births in DP camps- are there records? For Germany, the short answer is no. Births and marriages should have been registered in the local (German) town, but it seems that for practical and emotional reasons, this was not done. Possibly the U.S. Army kept records, but if so, these records don't seem to exist at the National Archives and Records Administration. The weddings were likely just religious ceremonies. Possibly the refugees feared that registering births or marriages would hinder their chances at emigration.
