Genealogy Guide: Yizkor Books

Originals

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research at the Center for Jewish History has the most extensive collection of yizkor books in the U.S. (more than 750 of the ~1,000 titles).  A list of most of these is available at https://www.yivo.org/Yizkor.  You may also search for yizkor books in the Center for Jewish History’s online catalog at http://search.cjh.org, by entering a place name and the phrase “memorial book.”

Yizkor books can also be found at several other libraries in New York City, such as the New York Public Library’s Dorot Jewish Division, and many other Jewish libraries and archives around the world. For a complete list of institutions that have substantial collections of Yizkor books, visit http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/yizlibs.html.

For a listing of Yizkor books at New York City libraries, see Bibliography of Eastern European Yizkor (Memorial) Books with Call Numbers for Five Judaica Libraries in New York. Appendix B of Genealogical Resources in New York, edited by Estelle M. Guzik (New York: Jewish Genealogical Society, 2003).

JewishGen Yizkor Book Project English Translations

This website features English translations of many yizkor books (Note: Some of these books have been only partially translated.  As this volunteer-run project is still in progress, please check back regularly for new translations). This website also allows you to search for the libraries that hold a particular yizkor book and to search for names within the translated portions of yizkor books, including the necrologies.

GenealogyIndexer.org Searchable Yizkor Books
Genealogy Indexer is working to fully index all of the yizkor books that are viewable online on the New York Public Library website (see above). Please note that most yizkor books were written in Hebrew and/or Yiddish. While you may conduct your search in English (as long as you select "Add Latin → Cyrillic + Hebrew"), it is recommended that you also try to search with Hebrew characters.
